| Hometown Hero: Sherwood Baker
Here is a statement from his family along with some great photos of our local hometown hero! "Sherwood Baker was a husband, a father, a son, brother, uncle, soldier and much to so many people. Sherwood was an individual whose presence was always known wherever he was. He touched the lives of many through his work as a Day Care teacher, being a local DJ and his work with the mentally handicapped. We've lost a great man in our family and in our community. Sherwood Baker was a hard working man who put 110% of himself into everything he did. He was excited to be a soldier and to be able to defend his country. But you all know that Sherwood. The Sherwood we know, and the man we want you to know is the man who gave up his weekends to entertain dozens. Gave up afternoons to DJ his son's football games and kept his son home on holidays like Martin Luther King day because the school didn't recognize it as a national holiday. He wanted his family to understand the importance of these sometimes overlooked days and what it is to be an American.. Sherwood loved to teach people how to do the most ridiculous dances out there, just because it was fun and he could spend hours with his son and nephews playing & rolling around on the ground with them acting like another big kid. These are some of the things that you didn't know about this great soldier. There are things that great people do and there are things that great people are and Sherwood Baker was both of these. When we say we lost an amazing person in our lives now you can get a glimpse of what we mean. We would like to thank all of the support that the family has received so far. It's going to play a big role in getting through these times that we don't understand. Please keep Debra, JD, our family and our fellow soldiers in your prayers. And we still ask of you to donate to Sherwood's fellow comrades still fighting abroad." |
